We offer straightforward licensing for our retail fonts, covering most uses for a single price.
Commercial License
Our Commercial License allows a font to be used in the public domain for printed, digital, online, interactive and spatial works. This differs from the separate ‘Desktop’ and ‘Web’ licenses offered by some foundries.
The cost of this license is determined by company size, measured by the total number of people that work for the licensee. We don’t need to know how many installs or users there will be, or how much traffic or downloads online platforms will have, just the number of employees.
This pricing model recognises that larger companies can get more value out of a font, whilst allowing smaller companies and start-ups to be supported through lower prices.
When you purchase a Commercial License, you receive the fonts in OTF, WOFF and WOFF2 file formats. Other formats are available on request.

Trial License
A Trial License gives you permission to download and use limited versions of our fonts for testing, prototyping and pitching work to clients. This covers desktop installation and use, and testing on private and unpublished websites.
Trial fonts are supplied as OTF and WOFF2 file formats.

FAQs
I’m a designer buying a font for client work... who is the licensee?
The company or individual that has commissioned the design work should own the license. Unless you’re a designer creating work for yourself, your client will be the licensee. You will be asked for their name as part of the checkout process.
Can I pay by invoice instead of through the website?
Yes. Email us to arrange payment by invoice and bank transfer.
How can I retrieve a previous order or invoice?
If you've made a purchase through our website you will have been emailed a receipt with links to download your fonts and invoice. If this information is lost or the download link expired, email us your invoice number and we can re-issue the information.
What if the company grows in size after purchasing a license?
If the company size grows into a higher pricing tier, we ask that you contact us to arrange for a revised license agreement. We’re not able to offer refunds if a company shrinks or closes.
Is ‘company size’ the only way to determine the cost of a license?
We can issue short term and annual licenses, or something else tailored to how you plan to use the fonts if our standard Commercial license isn’t a good fit. Email us and we’ll be happy to discuss different approaches.
What restrictions or limitations does a Commercial License have?
License Extensions may be needed if fonts are used in design works created for broadcast graphics (television, cinema, streaming) or web-based video platforms (YouTube / Vimeo etc). This is because of the potential reach and subsequent value a font can have through these channels. Third-party applications (that allow user-generated artwork to be made with our typefaces) and NFTs are the only other uses that fall outside of the Commercial license. Contact us if you have any questions.
Are there discounts for charities / non-profits / community projects?
We’re always keen to support non-commercial projects, so email us with some details and we’ll work something out!
I’m a student, can I use a font in my work?
Yes! Our trial fonts can be used freely in educational work. If you post your designs online, we just ask that you tag us @counterfoundry.
Can I try a full version of a font before purchasing a Commercial License?
Our trial fonts are subset to Latin Extended-A and include 350+ glyphs, but don’t have any of the alternate characters or OpenType features. If you want to test a full version before going ahead with a purchase, please contact us and we’ll be happy to help.
Email type@counterfoundry.com for further support or questions about licensing our fonts.
